When we found out Walt’s due date, November 3, I immediately hoped that he would make his appearance a bit earlier. I wanted a Halloween baby! Our first born just had to have a cool birthday. Since my plan was to go into labor naturally and continue to deliver him unmedicated, I knew that his coming on Halloween was most likely not going to happen.

I had a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday the 30th, and I was encouraged to hear that I was already 3.5 cm dilated and 80% effaced. Dr. Ross was pretty certain that we would meet our baby before the weekend. I wasn’t so sure. I hadn’t really felt significant contractions and he had not dropped at all. That night, we went out for some cheap Mexican food and I came home to take Heidi for a long walk. Exhausted and sore, I took a bath and called it a night.

Around 4:00 am, I awoke to some unfamiliar pains. I walked around our quiet house for a while, bounced on a birthing ball, climbed back into bed and finally woke up Kent. “Hey Kent, I’m pretty sure I’m in labor”. Reassuring him that I was timing the irregular contractions, he had plenty of time to have coffee, bacon, shower, pack and feed Heidi. Meanwhile, I was pacing, timing and freaking Heidi out. Contractions were coming on stronger and quicker. Between contractions, I felt it necessary to put on makeup and a half decent outfit… oh the crazy thoughts that dominated my mind.

On our way to the hospital, we sent texts to our family to let them know it was game time. I soaked in what that early morning looked like the whole way there. This was the ride I had been waiting on for 9 months. As I gripped the handle on the side of the car, I announced that I was going to be sick in about 10 seconds. We were in unusually heavy 6:30 am traffic, and in a left hand turning lane. The threat of being run over while in labor was not my dream scenario, but we made it unscathed to the hospital. After answering 3 million questions for the hospital administration, I was at 5 cm dilated and 100% effaced. “This is going to be quick,” I thought. We will meet our son very soon.

Tub. Shower. Bed. I desperately rotated between those 3 spots in an attempt to find a comfortable position. My dear friend Kamin has been on deck to photograph Walt’s birth before we were even expecting a child. Our friendship graduated to a place unknown after it was all over. I remember thinking that she and Kent were putting on brave and cheerful faces as labor became more intense, but their look of worry gave them away. In my preparation to give birth, I thought that the least amount of people and chatter in the room would help me the most. The idea of lots of nurses cheering me on would annoy me and cause me to lose focus. I wanted to experience natural childbirth and the stubborn part of me would do it all on my own, thank you very much. The surprising truth is that I thrived when I was being challenged and pushed to my limits. The cheers of my husband, nurses and Kamin were what kept me going.

Kent was strong, silent, prayerful; everything I needed. I know that it was all quite emotional for him to watch.

Around noon, I had progressed to 8 cm but Walt still had not dropped. Dr. Ross’s sporadic visits were welcomed, but each time he left, I knew I still had a lot of work to do. Finally, around 4:00 pm, my water was broken and the intensity was unlike anything I’ve known. Noises were coming out of me that I had not heard before. In those loud moments, I would look to the door and hope that no one was walking by. By early evening, I announced I was ready to push. With each contraction, I pushed in groups of 3. 1 hard push, 1 even harder push and then 1 exhausted push. 3 slow moving hours went by with progress being made. With each need to push, I announced to the room, “Okay, I’m ready.”

As I looked to my right, with tired eyes and body, I saw Dr. Ross enter the room wearing a mask and gloves. With a handful of pushes, Walt was crowning. The doctor announced, “This baby has a lot of hair!” “This is a big baby!”  I was filled with immediate relief that he was a big baby. “Ah, that has to be the reason it’s taken so long to push him out,” I thought. With one last push, my body unhinged itself and Walt came rushing out.

The pain had vanished; I was finally holding our child. I silently studied every inch of him, taking in every detail. Our Halloween baby was here and he was perfect. I looked at Kent, in complete shock and delight at what had just happened. We all took wagers on how much our big baby weighed. “I’d say 8 lbs, 1 oz,” said one nurse. Kent and I were hilariously surprised when he was in fact 8 lbs, 9 oz.

While we prepared to introduce our family to Walt, our doctor laid hands upon our little one and prayed over our family.

The combination of adrenaline and the desire to snuggle with Walt made sleep nonexistent that night. Our little family had gained its newest member; this is what I was after all along.

I know that I probably won’t, but I don’t want to chance forgetting these special moments and fine details. Along with regularly scheduled posts, I’m planning on sharing the story of  how it all began, how we told our family and friends and ultimately, the birth story. This is the story of how we told our family and friends.

It’s 3:03am and apparently 4 1/2 hours of sleep is all I need right now. I’m wide awake wondering if I’m up for a reason, if this is for practice or the real deal? In due time, we shall see. Until then, this is the perfect time to tell the story of how we shared our exciting news with family and friends.

1 129 1024x680 How We Revealed The Big News | A Pregnancy Story

After telling Kent that he’d soon be a father, I knew I had some time to plan out how we would tell our parents. The only strategy was that we’d need to tell all of them in a very short span of time. The plan was to hit the local parents with the news first and work our way out. We had Kent’s mom and sister over for Sunday lunch and we knew exactly how we’d spill the beans. As we sat down to a lovely lunch, Kent prayed a beautiful prayer and ended it perfectly with, “and thank you for our 6 week old baby growing inside Carmen…”. The prayer was officially over! Their mouths dropped, tears fell and we assured them that it was true! Oh, how much I love a good surprise! After lots of questions answered, we washed dishes and laughed at how wonderful it felt to finally tell someone the news.

Now, it was on to Clanton. My approach with my mom was a bit different. I didn’t have a game plan, I was going to feel out the conversation and see where we could take it. After eating brunch and wrapping up the meal, I still couldn’t find an “in”. The conversation just did not lend itself it to an “I’m pregnant” moment. Kent casually asked her to remind him when her birthday was and as she said “November 9th”, I knew that was my chance. “So, that’s 6 days after the baby is due”. It took her a minute to figure out that we weren’t kidding. I don’t think we made too much of a scene in the restaurant, only a few minor screams and tears!

Two grandmother’s down, now it was on to the grandpas!

My Dad had just turned 50, and I thought it would be a wonderful gift if we told him on his birthday. The only problem, he lives in South Carolina, so it would have to be over Skype. I really wanted to be able to do it in person, so when he mentioned coming for a visit  the next week, we knew that would be the perfect time. For his birthday, I got him this wonderful coffee table photography book. I wrote a long message with well wishes, prayers and at the very, very end, mentioned that his 50th year would be the year he becomes a grandpa. We presented him with his gift after dinner and as he leafed through the book, I told him that I wrote a little note in the front for him. He scanned it, got emotional and left the table. Hrm, not exactly how we saw this happening. As he returned to the table, he thanked me for the book and what I had written. I could tell that he had not made it to the “grandpa” part yet! I gently nudged him along to reread what I had written. When he finally realized that we were telling him about baby Michael, he laughed and I was so thankful that we waited to tell him in person.

Kent’s dad proved to be the impossible get! After numerous attempts to set up any sort of get together, schedules just wouldn’t allow for anything timely and we were ready for ALL the parents to know! In true Kent and Big Larr fashion, Kent joked with his Dad that though we’d tried and tried to tell him in person, he was making it difficult; that we wanted to tell him that he would be a Pappy again! The way we ended up telling each parent fit them all so perfectly and I’m so thankful for each different way and reaction.

After hitting the 12 week mark, we were finally ready to share our news with the public. After mentioning a hair-brained idea I had to Kent about revealing the news, he was all in. The only words I needed to say apparently were, “stop motion” and “Heidi”. Seriously, can our dog do no wrong in his eyes?! Countless hours of editing and finding the perfect song, we were ready to upload the video.

Our Facebook exploded with the sweetest family and friends expressing how thrilled they were for us. It was the height of our “We’re Having a Baby” tour. It was so encouraging to see such sweet words from so many people. Everyone was finally let in on our secret and it felt so good.

The Buzz | A Personal Maternity Series | Week 13

April 29th, 2012

“Who’ll be taking your maternity and baby pictures?” That’s the question I’ve been getting shortly after anyone discovers that we are expecting our first child this fall. “Who’ll be taking your maternity and baby pictures?” That’s the question I’ve been getting shortly after anyone discovers that we are expecting our first child this fall. I can’t help but giggle each time I hear it as I plan to take the majority of our baby’s photos. However, I’ve had it mentally planned for awhile that I would entrust my sweet & talented friend, Kamin, to shoot a proper maternity session along with some family photos.

As Kamin and I wrote emails back and forth, she convinced me that I should strongly consider doing a maternity series, be it monthly or weekly. I thought about it and was immediately tired just thinking about it! After taking a pregnant nap, I rallied and the idea came right to me… almost. I began shooting a self portrait against a plain background and planned to continue that identical shot (and identical dress) throughout the entire series. After editing the image, I wasn’t completely convinced this was the direction I wanted to go. It didn’t feel like me.

THEN the idea really came right to me! I’ll be shooting a weekly series titled “…for baby” It will focus on everything surrounding welcoming baby Michael–the growing, eating, celebrating, naming, decorating, going fishing!

We’re kicking things off at Week 13, Outdoorsy for baby.

When I received an email from Mary about photographing her family, she mentioned she had  7 year old twin boys. I thought, I’m gonna have to practice my really silly noises and jokes to get the boys comfortable. As you’ll see below, it didn’t take much or long before they were more than at home in front of the camera. (I just wonder what they were whispering to one another!)

The Griner family made the trip over from Athens, GA for the day. What an absolute honor that is! I also loved Mary’s idea to go for the neutral look along with the natural background of the field. Just beautiful!

He was 6 pounds, 12 ounces the night he was born and he certainly felt that small when I held him and placed him in each position for our first shoot together. What a sweet boy with an even sweeter head full of hair! Luke is an extra special newborn, as his mama is my husband’s step sister. We’re all family now!

I was at the hospital when Luke was born and there is a birth story to go along with his newborns. We’re doing things a little opposite this time around! Stay tuned for the birth story and watch Luke grow here on the blog for his 1st year.

This guy’s for real, Swamp People for real. So, it was only fitting that we ventured to the outskirts of Selma for some senior portraits. Dirt roads, the lake, his mama’s back porch, we went all over. What a wonderful guy Wil is and what a pleasure it was to spend the afternoon with him and his family.

Congratulations, Wil! Have a great senior year!

What an honor it is to photograph these special occasions for my family, not only in Kelli’s life, but Kristian’s, Erin’s, Bucky‘s, Brittany‘s, Arsella‘s and Heather’s (I didn’t have a blog when I photographed Heather’s wedding.).

I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon with the Hosmer’s capturing their sweet boys in action! Joseph had just turned the big 1, so celebrating was in order. Of course, no 1 year portrait would be complete without a sock monkey hat…only Joseph had other plans.

What a sweet session this was! Thank you Hosmer family for the honor of documenting this important stage!

Post Edit: It’s cold today! Obviously, I wrote this prior to the temperature drop. Gorgeous weather either way.
